BRITISH CERAMICS BIENNIAL
ARTIST KANG HYO LEE
KANG HYO LEE is a Korean artist whom participated in the British Ceramics Biennial 2017. His work consists of large (fired in situ) ceramic vases. He used Terracotta clay, locally sourced to the Biennial, in Stoke-on-Trent. I assisted with the organisation, transporting, preparing the clay and layering for the clay platforms.
Alongside volunteering in other areas for the British Ceramics Biennial, I also spent a few days volunteering for Kang Hyo Lee, a Korean artist. He needed help preparing the clay in order to build the structured walls of the 2m high ceramic vessels. The work was physical and demanding. We transported 200 bags of clays, which was locally sourced and emptied the bags and moulded them into the desired amounts that we were instructed to do. I enjoyed assisted an internationally renowned artist on his project. I observed his leadership skills as an artist, and how he approached and instructed others to help him with this project. I learnt that it is very important to present good communication skills to everyone in the group, making sure that instructions were clear at all times.
